For the die-hard landlocked salmon fisherman, April 1 is a day that has been circled on the calendar for a very long time. April 1 marks the beginning of the land-lock salmon fishing season here in New Hampshire.

The landlocked salmon is a cousin of the Atlantic salmon. Stranded inland when the glaciers receded, landlocked salmon possess the same strength and determination of its cousin. Landlocked salmon are voracious eaters of smelt and can grow to very large sizes. The state record landlocked salmon was caught in Pleasant Lake in New London. The fish was 36-inches long and weighed over 18 pounds.
