Male brook trout are aggressively territorial at this time of year. (STEVE ANGERS PHOTO)

Fall is a great time to fish the remote trout ponds of New Hampshire. Brook trout are in their spawning colors and as aggressive as they can be. Larger fish that have spent the summer in the deep cold waters of the pond venture out into the shallow waters to find a mate and procreate. With this in mind, your columnist hit the trails into two remote ponds: one in the White Mountain National Forest and one in the Great North Woods.

The hike into the WMNF pond was one and a half miles. The online searches said that it was an easy hike. Their definition and mine are different. One and a half miles straight uphill is not what this angler considers easy. Moderate would be a better term.
