Loons are a sure sign that you are in trout territory. (STEVE ANGERS PHOTO)

As an angler of remote still waters, there is a constant that tells one they are in a wilderness setting. The loon has become the fingerprint of all that is wild in our New England landscape.

Fifty years ago, the call of the loon was one of wonder and amazement. When you heard the call, it brought that combination of wonderment and peace in knowing that where you were was a long way from any type of civilization. It was a badge of honor to be in a place where one could hear, and perhaps see, a loon.
