If you’re a cycling-loving ghoul who just wants to have fun, you thrive during the Halloween season. Rising from the crypt earlier and earlier, neighborhoods around the valley from frightful Fryeburg, Maine, blood-curdling Bartlett, terrifying Tamworth and beyond have front yards and porches festooned with inflatable monsters, cuddly creatures, creative pumpkins, spider webs and more.
Just tooling around on your bicycle is time well spent soaking in nature’s color as a backdrop to the eerie enthusiasm on display. Choose an ancillary leg off one of your regular routes if possible — think of it as taking the local train instead of the express — and slow down to take a look at the ghosts, goblins and gourds on the ground. It’s certainly a wonderful way for a family with kids to get into the spooky spirit. Squeal while you wheel.
