Loops make for interesting rides. Scenery changes and doesn’t repeat itself. All you need are good maps, ample supplies and energy. It also helps to have an adventurous spirit and a sense of humor. With that in mind, we set out to ride two multi-surface loops in Fryeburg, Maine.

We executed the first loop last week. Parking at Maine Visitor’s Center in Fryeburg, we pedaled our mountain bikes 4 miles down the Mountain Division Trail to its end. At the Route 113 junction, we rode a short distance, then turned right by the Eastern Slope Airport sign onto Lyman Road. We followed that a half-mile to the split where Lyman Road goes right to the airport, and Clay Pond Road goes left.
