Not too long ago, when there weren’t any mountain bikes, 50 years ago, bicycles were made to go on roads, mostly paved. They had tires, brakes and geometry suited for that type of travel. But then, riders started going “off-road” and found their bikes not well-suited for rough riding.

“The bike evolved to deal with the environment,” said mountain bike pioneer Charlie Kelly in the video: tinyurl.com/y6b8y6cd. He and his riding buddies, Gary Fischer and Joe Breeze, ultimately “changed people’s perceptions of what they can do with a bike.”
