In Center Ossipee, I looked for Conway Branch Rail Trail Phase 1 construction. Past N.H. Trails Bureau machinery, I found old abandoned rails and a new 8-foot-wide path beside them. Walking down the trail, I spotted others in the quiet, cool tunnel of trees. When I got too close, they “turned tails” and disappeared. It was a magical moment to see three deer in a place where I could sense both the history and future of this 21-mile scenic corridor.

History: Boston and Maine’s Conway Branch rails were last used in 1973. This once active rail line transported passengers from Boston to North Conway in 1872 until 1961, when the last train left the station.
