Responses to last week’s Tele-Talk question — “What should the state do to address mental health services and a lack of beds in psychiatric facilities for New Hampshire residents?” — asked for more beds, were critical of Memorial Hospital and the state psychiatric hospital, and took issue with the cost of treatment. The full selection of the responses is printed here.

Rather, what should our state and nation do about lack of care, period? Not one physician in the state of N.H. or Maine will see me unless I have proof of medical insurance. Self-pay patients (as I was) who are in pain and suffering are curtly informed by nearly all receptionists to go to the ER, which can easily lead to bankruptcy after multiple visits and follow-ups. If one earns approximately $69,000 per year, there is no financial assistance. Mental health is about as important to our legislators and politicians as everything else in our lives. As Americans we would much rather have people living under bridges and existing without proper mental and health care than deal with the ignorant hatred of universal health-care and caring for our neighbors out of taxes. Our measure as a nation is globally understood to be a country of people who hate one another and therefore everyone else.
