In a 9-1 vote, the institutions that steward the Northeast’s tallest mountain voted to take a step toward designating Mount Washington as a World Heritage Site, joining famous worldwide locations such as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Egypt’s Great Pyramids and Arizona’s Grand Canyon. It would be the first in New England. The lone nay vote was cast by former Auto Road General Manager Howie Wemyss, who is concerned about the mountain’s ability to handle more traffic. Proponents say the designation could open revenue streams to help preserve it.
