Many inn and motel operators say the valley has too many hotel rooms and too few guests to fill them. Meanwhile, a hotel broker predicts it’s only a matter of time until more chain hotels are built in North Conway. Janice Crawford, executive director of the Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, said some innkeepers have floated the idea of a moratorium on new hotels in Conway. While it is "very difficult" to pass rules specifically preventing a legal, permitted use like a hotel, said Conway town planner Tom Irving, towns can adopt planning rules or overlay districts that regulate the size or type of businesses in a particular area.
