One letter-writer apparently does not approve of Dr. Knirk’s guidance on masks. He claims his “facts” out of context or selective as they may be, somehow point to a better path.
The Surgeon General's comments on masks in February made sense at the time. When there were just a handful of cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., it seemed wise to urge people to leave the masks for health care workers who needed them. Soon after, as cases spread, there was more evidence suggesting that people can spread COVID-19 and his advice changed.
As for the June 5 WHO quote, what they actually said was this: “If it is absolutely necessary for a sick person or a contact to leave the house, they should wear a medical mask." They also said, in the same speech... “I wish to be very clear that the guidance we are publishing today is an update of what we have been saying for months: that masks should be used as part of a comprehensive strategy in the fight against COVID. Masks ALONE will not protect you from COVID-19."
So, let us all take the guy’s advice and get a second opinion. How about 100 to start? (From 100 of the world’s top scientists.) “There are numerous studies that suggest if 80 percent of people wear a mask in public, then COVID-19 transmission could be halted. Masks might be the most important tool we currently have to fight the pandemic.“
I think I’ll stay on “this path we are on.” It seems to me that people who are experts in the field are a bit more qualified. As for the doubters, what harm does this small inconvenience do to you? Suck it up buttercup.
