To the editor:In response to Mr. William Marvel's article (Column, Nov. 19). If you want to know about the "Middling School Experience," ask a student or teacher at the Middle School not an adult who happens to live with them. As I read Mr. marvel's article, I became more and more offended by his words. The concerts and assemblies Mr. Marvel complains about were part of the giant patriotic push that the whole country was participating in. These concerts, I might add, were incorporated in what we were learning in music. At my elementary school, the 6th-graders helped set good examples for the lower grade children by taking on leadership roles in concerts and assemblies, which, I might add were incorporated in what we were learning in music. I don't know about other kids, but my reading teacher would not give "pages of fluff" an "A." As I myself am an "obsessed reader," I am surprised to find out that this boy dislikes reading class, when I find it intriguing to look at literature from different perspectives. Having two teachers for parents, I know that they work very hard at school and, more often than not, bring home more work to do! Half days at school are usually used so that teachers can have conferences with concerned parents, and meet with colleagues to discuss points of interest. Adults work hard for their day off, don't they? Well, our teachers seem to understand that we work hard and deserve the occasional day off, too. I will grant that having two languages in a quarter is ridiculous, that is, if they weren't only introductory courses. I would commend the social studies teacher on teaching a wide variety of subjects, and giving the chance for extra credit. Two different books may say different things on the same subject quite often. Home schooling is a wonderful thing, except that it isolates children from tolerating kids they would rather avoid, a social situation not uncommon in the work force. If you think, Mr. Marvel, that this boy would benefit from home schooling, why don't you do it? It would save us all from a great deal of complaining.
