To the editor:I recently received a Customer Comment Card asking why we (Hannaford) charge a quarter for the "free" Conway Daily Sun from the red paper box on our sidewalk. This customer did not provide a name or telephone number so I am responding in this fashion.First and foremost, all quarters collected go directly to local charities. There are a few of these "quarter" boxes located within the valley, not just at Hannaford. I replaced the sign on the box that stated, "Quarters To Local Charities" as it had somehow been removed. The reason for the quarter charge is to provide an opportunity for the shopper to get a copy of the Sun when all the inside free papers are all gone. Our store does receive an adequate amount of the Sun's papers each day, however, it is increasingly difficult to stop or prevent some customers from literally taking stacks of them. These papers are intended for our customers and not for others to stock their own businesses, etc.I hope this response reaches the customer who wrote the comment and I want to thank you for your inquiry.
