To the editor:An American disaster, that is George W. Bush. Before his inauguration and the celebration of his second term as president of the United States, George W. Bush has shown himself to be a political tsunami on his way to remaking and eventually destroying the Republican Party and doing incalculable damage to the nation itself. The presidents first act of sheer indulgence is the nomination of a member of the White House staff to be attorney general of the United States. The nomination of Alberto R. Gonzales, who has a friendship with the president, has transformed the process of selecting the nations chief law enforcement officer into the equivalent of a frat party for a pledge whose membership gives his sponsor increasing influence. There is nothing in Mr. Gonzales record of jurisprudence that in anyway shows dissent or independence relative to his sponsor. His overriding virtue is his dependence on Mr. Bush for judicial and political mobility.Of all of the positions in government, the attorney general is perhaps the most important. He is the peoples lawyer and Mr. Bush has shown the greatest disdain for the American public with the Gonzales nomination since Jack Kennedy chose his brother to fill that cherished responsibility.
