Goshen was the local name for a pair of separate "locations" granted to veterans of the French and Indian War, and settled in the 1760s. Those two tracts lay below the southeast corner of Conway, on the east side of what was then called Walker's Pond. Both locations were annexed to Conway in 1800 (to the regret of many modern-day residents). A Sullivan County town was incorporated as Goshen in 1791, but as late as 1915 Conway's town reports still referred to the Goshen neighborhood here, although it was already more commonly called South Conway.
Davis Hill did not fall within the two locations that formed Goshen. It lay, instead, above Conway's original southern boundary. Maintenance of the direct road to South Conway was discontinued by about 1910, however, and eventually most automobiles could only reach Davis Hill via the Brownfield Road and the old Goshen district. Thus did it come to be regarded as part of South Conway.
