Sixteen decades ago, all federal agencies were dominated by the Republican Party, and were mobilized to keep that party in power. Partisan appropriation of government resources reflected a common corruption (then, as now), but most historians have overlooked how extensively Abraham Lincoln's administration engaged in it. It can take that long for passions to subside enough to consider an unpleasant truth.
My latest historical endeavor involves this government project to demonize the loyal opposition, which culminated in the presidential election of 1864. More than three years into the Civil War, the Union cause was faltering. Confederates had enjoyed an astounding improvement in their prospects that spring, and although outnumbered everywhere they still resisted stubbornly in all major theaters during the bloodiest year of the war. Even some of Lincoln's erstwhile supporters were discouraged by the mounting butcher's bill. Eleven weeks before the election, Lincoln asked his cabinet to endorse a document in which he admitted that his reelection seemed unlikely.
For all his erudition Marvell seems to have little conception of what a Trump second term would mean to the liberties he purports to cherish. Then again, I am reminded of the piece he wrote about the violence at Charlottesville - failing to mention that it was a white supremacist rally with Neo-nazis, Klansman and far-right militias. Some of those same people would be bludgeoning Capital police officers with American flags on J6 .
And when Trump wins next week, what will you say to justify the, "Resist", "Not Trump at any cost", ANTIFA wing of the Democrat Party's anticipated violence?
Just asking, because if you recall the last election, all the stores and retail shops of downtown DC were boarded up with plywood in anticipation of a Trump win.
There is more than ample evidence to support our worse fears of violence from the Left when they don't get their way.
So, let's not pretend there will be a peaceful transition or an acceptance of the election results when Trump wins.
