PORTSMOUTH — Jay Lucas of Portsmouth and Manhattan, pleaded guilty on July 24 to securities fraud, investment adviser fraud, wire fraud and money laundering in connection with a scheme to raise over $50 million from investors by falsely representing that their money would be invested in early-stage health and wellness companies, according to a press release from Jay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Lucas, 71, who ran as the Republican candidate for governor in New Hampshire and lost in 1998 to now U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, was the founder and managing partner of Lucas Brand Equity LLC, a private equity fund based in Manhattan that was known as LBE.
