Having harked the call of Henry Thoreau at an early age, I've always valued simplicity, and the unrelenting advance of technology has only stiffened my resolve in that quarter. Fancy new gadgets only multiply the potential for malfunction, and minimize the chances of repair (especially by the owner). I've spent far more to keep my 25-year-old Caravan alive than most people would have invested because it has crank windows, manually operated doors and back gate, and a working tape deck for my collection of cassettes. It's the only new car I ever bought, and it has never left me on the side of the road, waiting for a tow. I can't say that about any later-model car I've owned.
The only problem it has presented involves the computerized module that controls the transmission. Had there been a manual-shift model, I would have bought that.
