After a long cold winter, every little bit of warmth is both a treat and a welcome harbinger of better things to come. Even so, snow is very much a part of the life-blood of our economy, a force we would not, or could not, live without. And yet, the fairest of seasons to come does a wonderful job of dividing our years into quarters, mostly livable chunks of weather and time.

Just as we ache and grow tired of woodpiles and extra blankets, off through the forest we can hear the distant thrum of rivers rushing, melting green ice, even as the water rises fast against slumbering riverbanks, awakening at last the bears and the trees. Looking to the south at noon, our faces turn hopefully toward a friendly sun whose northward journey begins to thaw our frozen features, even as the days grow measurably longer. In such a moment, we too begin to awaken.
