Susan Chase of New Castle and Jackson died peacefully at home on April 26, 2026. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 21, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Charles S. and Ruth E. Chase.

After World War II, the family moved to California but enjoyed summers in New Castle, traveling across the country and back four times, sleeping under the stars. She returned to Portsmouth at age 8, and her first job was as a waitress at the old Portsmouth Boston and Maine Railroad depot at age 14. She later worked at Foye’s in Portsmouth’s Market Square.
