When I came to the Eastern Slope Region about the time it became the Mount Washington Valley almost 60 years ago, the area still had its North Country charm. From Conway to North Conway, Route 16 was a series of mom and pop restaurants, shops and even gas stations. There were only a few manmade local attractions in addition to the area’s many natural features.

But soon the wrecking balls and chainsaws started to change the character of our valley. Conway Village saw a couple of old homes give way to modern gas stations, and many of the Strip’s big white pines were felled to give way to shopping centers. The Presidential Hotel at Four Corners in Conway Village burned down, but the Redmen’s Hall next door — for a short time the Uppercrust Restaurant — was razed to make way for what is now the Garg complex.
