This was a big week in northern New Hampshire. The foliage peaked and began to peter as the Fryeburg Fair wound down, alleviating us of the seasonal influx of tourists as they departed, sated and satisfied on spectacular scenery and fried dough. The New Hampshire DOJ issued a report that found the Berlin Police Department’s response in the days leading up to the murder of 25-year-old Marisol Fuentes Huaracha “wholly insufficient.” Ya think?

To recap, in April, Michael Gleason, Jr. of Berlin was arrested for kidnapping and sexually assaulting his estranged wife, 25-year-old Marisol Fuentes Huaracha. At the time of his arrest police confiscated 24 firearms. And really, who among us doesn’t need two dozen firearms? Gleason also had a battery of additional weapons — an air rifle, a crossbow and a collapsible baton to name a few. Had I been the magistrate in this case, I daresay I’d have considered this cache a flaming hot red flag. The police prosecutor certainly did, arguing that due to the seriousness of the offenses he should be detained. Instead, the magistrate thought it better to grant $5,000 bail to a kidnapper and rapist with an arsenal.
