Medicaid provides dental coverage for children, but not for adults. HB 692, recently considered in the Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee, proposes to extend dental coverage to adults who are covered by Medicaid. Currently, New Hampshire’s Medicaid adult dental benefit is limited to treating infections and severe pain, usually in the emergency room. That is too little, too late.

Oral health is an important component of general health and should not be neglected. Oral prophylaxis, which includes professional cleaning to prevent periodontal disease and examination of the mouth for oral cancer, cavities and broken teeth, allows the early diagnosis of oral problems to prevent more serious problems later, such as loss of teeth, serious oral infections or difficult-to-treat late-stage cancer.
