GORHAM — Gorham Police Chief Jimmy Willhoite defended his department’s cooperation with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying it enhances the police force’s ability to protect residents.

At last month’s town meeting, residents voted 99 to 75 to recommend the police department withdraw from the 287 (g) agreement that gives local and state police the authority to perform immigration enforcement. But while voters can request the police withdraw from the agreement, the final decision rests with the police chief and Willhoite made it clear his department will enforce all laws, including the 287(g) agreement.
