At a family Easter celebration this year, politics was being discussed and Pete Buttigieg’s candidacy was being pondered. A longtime family friend wondered aloud, “Why do the gays have to advertise the whole gay thing all the time?” This is a question that is absolutely exhausting to anyone in the lesbian, bisexual, gay, pansexual, queer, questioning, transgender and supportive allies (thereafter in this column referred to as LGBTQ) community.
Why? Why do we have to “advertise it”? Because of comments like that. Because if we don’t, many people will assume heterosexuality and cisgender or binary identification. Because it’s not OK to make up your mind about who someone based on a five-second glance in their direction, because the days of being invisible are over. Because it’s lethal not to. Because being out and “advertising it” is simply living an authentic life.
