To the editor:

Does anyone else remember when there were Debating Teams , Science Fairs, Chess Clubs, and Plays and Musicals and Operettas performed by choral groups supported by orchestral music performances by their instrumentalist classmates, and directed by dedicated adult musicians in public schools at all grade levels across America? Does anyone remember being required to choose a foreign language to complete with a passing grade to receive a high school diploma for students choosing to apply for college entry for any type of degree program? Many such activities were readily available before, during and after regular school hours to some extent at all levels of public school experience. The "standards" for judging performance levels were seldom simply paper and pen (pencil) records of data concerning basic math, reading and writing skills. Those were merely one way to monitor a child's level of need for further support and guidance from peers, parents, teachers and other community members in preparation for increased involvement with their future choices for employment and social activities.
