To the editor:20 years ago the weather was cold and rainy, it was also a Sunday. Reagan and the Russians were front page news, Iraq and Iran were at war. April 10, 1983 was also the day the UNH Crew Team had a fund raiser. A fellow freshman, young and excited about life, asked his friends in a world geography class to donate to the cause. That was Wednesday. On Friday, Glenn David Hayes swung by to see about transferring to my mini dorm. That Sunday Hayes and his teammates went onto Great Bay to crew for cash. A freak wind blew. The sculls swamped. And Hayes alone drowned. I neither have nor live in Mount Washington Valley from where Glenn David Hayes hailed. But I hope that if any of his friends, family, neighbors or acquaintances read this, then know though I only knew Glenn a few short months, I think about where he might be now, especially around April 10. So much of the world has rushed by in the intervening years. Yet it is important to remember those left behind. To those who knew Glenn, he lives on with those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
