The Chocorua Inn started out as a farmhouse and kept on being added onto to create the rambling structure seen here. It stood at the top of the hill on Route 16 overlooking Chocorua Lake and Mount Chocorua. It burned in 1923. Many guests went on to buy farms to build their own summer cottages. (COURTESY PHOTO)

TAMWORTH — In 2005, the Chocorua Lake Basin Historic District was successfully accepted on the National Register of Historic Places.
The district includes 155 historic buildings across 6,000 acres, with the lake roughly at its center. The district's significance derives from a large cluster of late 19th and early 20th century summer resort houses built around and near the lake, and the role the area's landowners have played in the conservation of the lake and viewsheds associated with it and nearby Mount Chocorua. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
