What, or rather who, do the worlds of songwriting, Brownfield, Maine, and Mountain Top Music have in common? Carol Noonan is a veteran singer-songwriter who lives and teaches in Brownfield, Maine. This fall, she brings her real-world experience in music to Mountain Top's faculty. Noonan grew up in New England and attended New England Conservatory of Music as a classical voice major. She found her voice, however, in the folk idiom during the 1990s, working as lead vocalist for the band Knots and Crosses and producing many acclaimed albums of solo vocal music. Noonan is an independent and honest artist. Now she is ready to share the secrets of her craft.Recently, Noonan found herself in a teaching role and discovered that she loved it. She decided to take on some students in the area. Noonan will teach voice and songwriting this fall through Mountain Top. She offers studentsa way to find their personal voice, guides students through the process of creating songs, and advises students about the myriad performance details. On Oct. 5, Noonan will offer the first in a series of Mountain Top Master Classes. The class is scheduled from 7:30 to 9 at Salyards Museum in Conway. In this class, designed for musicians who want to improve their stage presence and musicianship, Noonan will discuss using microphones, developing stage banter, and choosing appropriate tunes for a set. The cost is $15. The class will be limited to 15 participants so that everyone involved has opportunity for asking questions and trying techniques. Future master classes are planned in "The Art of Listening," to be taught by Chris Nourse, and piano improvisation, to be taught by Michael Jewell. Mountain Top Music Center is a community music school. The school's mission is to enrich lives through music by providing inspiring music education and excellent listening and performing opportunities throughout the area. MTMC's faculty teach about 225 students a year at 15 locations from Bartlett to Tamworth. Mountain Top Music Center also organizes a program of public and private concerts throughout the area.
