Joseph E. Sullivan Jr., 76, died peacefully at his home, June 30, 2006, in North Conway.Mr. Sullivan was beloved father of Nathaniel Sullivan, Hannah Sullivan, Hope (Sullivan) Galton, Sarah (Sullivan) Mallett and Joseph E. Sullivan III (Ned), and beloved grandfather of Jeffrey and Christina Mallett. Mr. Sullivan also leaves three brothers, Paul, Robert and Gerald, all of Massachusetts.Born in Newton, Mass., the son of Dr. Joseph E. Sullivan and Alice G. (O'Brien), Mr. Sullivan was raised in Waban, Mass, the eldest of four brothers. Mr. Sullivan attended Newton Public Schools, graduated from Buchkingham Brown and Nichols, attended Harvard University on an ROTC scholarship from 1948 to 1950, and graduated from Tufts University in 1952. After college, Mr. Sullivan served in the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Commander. He served as a Combat Veteran in Vietnam, taught at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., trained Navy Frogmen at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and worked for Naval Intelligence at the United States Pentagon.In 1969, Mr. Sullivan moved to the Mount Washington Valley, where he began Kearsarge Building Company, building single-family homes, condominiums and commercial buildings. In 1973, Mr. Sullivan opened The Blueberry Muffin Restaurant in North Conway, and later in Falmouth, Mass., and Indialantic, Fla., and The Yankee Clipper Inn in North Conway.Active in local politics, Mr. Sullivan had an editorial column in The Conway Daily Sun, served as a member of the Conway School Board, and formed the political action group CAT (Conway Association of Tax Payers). He was also a founding member of the Old Car Club of Conway.In his personal time, Mr. Sullivan was an active recreational pilot, avid yachtsman and talented painter. He will be missed by all who loved him.Calling hours will be held at Furber & White Funeral Home in North Conway on Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway on Thursday at 10 a.m. All are welcome. Private burial to follow.
