As autumn winds down ever so slowly, and the arrival of lasting snow still seems far off, we slide into the holiday season this year seemingly without fanfare. Yes, there have been Christmas displays up since before Halloween but the approach of Thanksgiving, albeit a week later in the year, as surely signals the arrival of our high holidays whether we gather on Thursday for turkey, or not.
There are always years when excitement reigns as we approach that darkest, longest night of the year. And there are other years when there is an unwelcome dissonance around the holidays that we can’t quite put our finger on. Age, to some degree, has a way of filtering such feelings, and it’s no surprise that older people find joy once again through the sparkle in younger people’s eyes. Who can’t help but smile in a room full of grandchildren gathered, excitedly, for the holidays?
