Ethel Gilmore Hurst of Lovell, Maine, will be writing a new column, "When I Was a Kid," based on her reminiscences of growing up in New England — back before the internet, cellphones, fast food and cable TV.I started school when I was 5½ at the Eliot School named for a hero of the Revolutionary War. The number of students and the number of teacher forced the eight classes to be divided up into four classrooms. We didn't have kindergarten so my first grade shared the classroom with the second grade. It was confusing at first because you weren't sure which teacher to pay attention to.
When I started first grade, I had to take the bus. I'll never forget Johnny Pasaturo's red bus. One day mother gave me a very shiny nickel for my milk at school. I was so proud of that nickel, I had to show it to Johnny when I got on the bus. From that day on he called me Shiny Nickel.
