In the historic building's latest incarnation, bar owners Eric LaPerna and Carrye Castleman-Ross have been thrilled to witness the renaissance of the formerly quiet street. Joining them are the thriving Vivo Italian restaurant and Tasteful Things, a bright, cheery shop selling gourmet olive oils, vinegars and Maine-made products.
While maintaining the charm of the old barn it once was, the Tap House is a modern, elegant space with low-key lighting, comfortable seating and a cool vibe. Along with a menu of small plates, the bar offers craft cocktails like the "Southern," a muddled cucumber-and-mint Hendrix martini with St. Germain; the "Veronica Holiday," an old-fashioned with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Salerno blood orange liqueur and Angostura bitters; and the "Porch Party," a refreshing highball with Deep Eddy Ruby Red vodka and edible nasturtiums. There are also New Orleans classics like the Sazerac and Corpse Reviver.
The Tap House is proud to carry a wide selection of Maine-made spirits and offers local beer on tap. On any given day you'll find pints of Bissell Bros., Foundation, Rising Tide and other offerings from small Portland breweries. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about both beer and cocktails, and love creating something unique.
Located at 18 Depot St, the Tap House is open year-round, seven days a week. Hours areMonday-Wednesday, 4 p.m. to close(always at least10 p.m.) and Thursday-Sunday 2 p.m. to close. Stop in and say hi to Carrye and her staff, and be sure to leave some time for a stroll down the street to check out all the other great locally owned businesses. Cheers!
