The automotive website Wards Auto puts out a list of the 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems, and this year’s list is unusual compared to past winners. For the first time in the 31 years that Wards has been announcing this category, 2025 is notable for featuring only one internal combustion engine. 90 percent of the list is made up of electric and hybrid drive trains.

Wards compiles this list by evaluating common parameters like horsepower, torque, and value, but also includes observed efficiency, new technology and NVH — or noise, vibration and harshness. Each brand selling a vehicle in the U.S. market is eligible to submit at least one nominee that’s all new or significantly improved, previous winners are also eligible.
