This year marks 100 years since Route 66 became a designated highway, and websites have popped up in support of the many events being held to celebrate.

I understand if many of you hold no special place in your heart for the historic highway — after all U.S. Route 66 starts in Chicago and ends in Santa Monica, Calif., and although pundits describe it as stretching from coast-to-coast, we New Englanders are keenly aware that the coast of Lake Michigan is far from our beloved seacoast. Still, the historical significance of “America’s Mother Road” can’t be ignored.
