The Hudson Motor Car Co. was founded in 1909 by department store magnate Joseph L. Hudson as the primary investor, along with some former employees of Olds Motor Works. Olds would become the Oldsmobile division of General Motors and its founder, Ransom Eli Olds, would go on to found REO, maker of the famous Speedwagon truck, not to be confused with the ‘80s band of the same name. But I digress.

Hudson brought forth the Essex brand in 1919 as a less expensive offering, but Hudson was always at best a distant third behind Ford and Chevrolet. Hudson absorbed Essex into their lineup a few years later, and in 1932, they rebranded their economy line Essex-Terraplane. Orville Wright purchased one of the first, owing to its well-engineered qualities.
