Merriam-Webster defines mammon as “material wealth or possessions, especially as having a debasing influence.” That’s why Jesus warned, “No one can serve two masters…You cannot serve both God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24). Modern biblical translations usually avoid ancient language and translate that passage, “You cannot serve both God and money.”

Sadly, many Americans seem impervious to Jesus’ teaching, just as our ancestors were. The United States began as a European get-rich-quick scheme, and we’ve never moved far from that overriding profit motive. It’s one important reason we got into the mess where we now find ourselves mired.
