To the editor:

I write in support of the position of County Commissioner Rick Sampson, opposing the county or the state becoming involved in backing a bond for the Balsams redevelopment project. Yes, pending legislation suggests that no public entity will be held responsible but can that really be certain? History shows that public entities are always the fall-guy when they back private, for-profit projects that fail. The Balsams developers cannot get sufficient private investment, so why should the public step in?

In any case, I view the Balsams project as a boondoggle. Where is the clientele going to come from? Why would affluent people from Boston or New York drive from 6 to 10 hours to Dixville when in roughly the same time they can fly to Aspen, Colo., or Utah or Sunshine at Banff where there is real snow? Without a modern airport in Coos County, the project is doomed. Alas, we are stuck with ATVs, sigh.
