BERLIN — In an effort to boost officer recruiting and retention, city councilors voted to amend the police contract and change the department’s current pay scales to increase the wage structure for its men and women.

A memo from the police union to the council outlined how the amendment would cover the costs for a proposed increase without needing more money added to the city budget for Fiscal Year 2027.
