Jan M. Smith, M.S.W., and Reiki master, has announced the opening of her new business, Intuit Counseling Services, at the T. Murray Wellness Center on 24 Pleasant Street in Conway.Smith is a clinical social worker who received her Master of Social Work degree in 1978 and has practiced in inpatient, outpatient and private settings since that time. Drawn to alternative and complementary healing techniques, she trained as a Reiki practitioner in 1990 and after three years of study and travel became initiated as a Traditional Teaching Usui Reiki Master in 1993. Over the years she has attended many additional trainings/certifications, and she offers services in Intuitive Counseling; Reiki treatments and classes; EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique); Guided Imagery; and workshops in personal development.A gifted intuitive, she utilizes her own life experiences in assessing and selecting those approaches that are best suited to individual needs. Smith believes that we have the answers to lifes challenges within, and she offers her insight, compassion and skill to guide clients to those answers, helping people to manifest their dreams and live their best life.Intuitive counseling sessions typically last for one hour and involve a review of the clients current issues that may be preventing them from achieving a successful career, satisfying relationships and positive feelings of health and happiness. Using her intuition and therapeutic skills, she will identify specific self-limiting beliefs, underlying patterns of behaviors and share practical tools to create desired life changes.Reiki is a Japanese word representing Universal Life Force Energy, which is a hands-on treatment to heal physical ailments as well as emotional and spiritual distress. As a Reiki master, she acts as a conductor of the energy and facilitates its transference to the recipient, resulting in a deep feeling of relaxation, peace and balanced wellness. By removing the external causes of stress and disease, Reiki supports the bodys immune system in healing. A session involves having the client lie fully clothed on a massage table and receiving gentle, noninvasive hands-on healing that treats the major organs of the body.EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is based on the discovery that imbalances in the bodys energy system have profound effects on ones personal psychology. The belief is that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the bodys energy system. Correcting these imbalances, which is done by tapping on certain body locations (the end points of your energy meridians), often leads to rapid remedies. EFT is easily taught and implemented and can be used for any issue from phobias to a pinched nerve.Guided Imagery is a type of guided daydreaming that uses imagination and your senses to replace negative, painful and debilitating images with positive, uplifting, healing and pleasurable ones. This technique is used in medical settings, therapists' offices and by professional athletes to undo the effects of prior unsuccessful experiences and reprogram your mind to engage in visions of healing, satisfaction and competence whether to combat a disease, accomplish physical feats or overcome fears and anxieties. Smith can design personalized tapes that can be replayed and used at home to solidify gains made during sessions.Smith also offers ongoing classes and workshops for the public, including a monthly spiritual film series, a monthly spiritual book discussion group, a Reiki exchange for practitioners and regularly scheduled Reiki Level I and II classes. For a current listing of all classes/workshops, consult Smith's Web site at www.intuitcounselingservices.com, or e-mail her at reikijan@adelphia.netIntuit Counseling Services offers a free initial consultation session to assist clients in identifying therapeutic services that will best meet their individual needs.
