Suzette Chaine, of Glen, was recently named executive director for Starting Point: Services for Victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence.Chaine has served Starting Point since 1997 in many professional capacities, most recently as the education and outreach coordinator. She is currently attending Plymouth State University pursuing a masters degree in education. Additionally, Chaine is enrolled in the Antioch New England Graduate Schools certification program for non-profit management.Suzette has a number of gifts that will help her succeed as director, especially her deep background in the field of education and her hands-on experience with the agency during a period of growth, said Rev. Anne Roser, president of the board of directors. Most importantly, we can count on her energy and personal commitment to the core societal issues of domestic violence and sexual assault.Starting Point is best known as a non-profit agency that provides confidential services to victims of domestic violence in Carroll County. However, the agencys scope goes beyond crisis services. Victims of violence either domestic or sexual can be helped by a trained advocate on any issue, from restraining orders to referrals for legal or social service support. A victim does not have to use the shelter to receive services, and confidentiality is assured.Starting Point also has education and prevention programs in 12 public schools in Carroll County and Fryeburg, entering classrooms to teach elementary, middle and high school students about appropriate, non-violent social and dating behaviors. Finally, the agency provides ongoing professional training to the staff of both Memorial and Huggins hospitals, law enforcement officers throughout Carroll County, mental health professionals, and other first responders to ensure that violent situations are recognized and that victims receive appropriate care and services. Chaine replaces Mary Mayhew, who left the agency to manage the University of New Hampshires Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program. Mayhew had been with Starting Point since 1995, nine years as the executive director. For more information about Starting Point: Services for Victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence, and the services it offers, call 356-7993 or toll free 1-800-336-3795.
