While I am not a duck hunter, I do subscribe to Ducks Unlimited to read their magazine on the basis of understanding duck ecology, habitat and their unique characteristics. Waterfowl have some interesting aspects of physiology that helps their survival. Vision is extraordinary and makes duck hunting quite a challenge for its enthusiasts. When they do migrate through here from the boreal and prairie regions of Canada, I marvel at their considerable migratory qualities for survival.
The March/April Ducks Unlimited issue this year suggested that while ducks have the same five senses the rest of us have, whether in the air or living in marshlands, waterfowl rely on sight more than any other of their senses. The structure of their eye allows the birds to see objects in fine detail, 2½ to three times farther away than humans can.
