Join John Howell, music journalist and local popular musicologist, for a “listening party” in the Majestic Theater in Conway Village today at 1 p.m. where he will play selections from the deep heritage of New Orleans piano music and talk about the singular artists who made it.

New Orleans is known for its “piano professors” — masters of the keyboard who defined the city’s unique musical sound. From Jelly Roll Morton to Professor Longhair, from Fats Domino to Huey “Piano” Smith, from Allen Toussaint to Dr. John, these self-taught maestros cooked up a flavorful gumbo of blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and Afro-Caribbean styles (rhumba, calypso, mambo) to create a rich history of inventive piano music.
