Everywhere there are signs of the seasons in transition. Sunrise hesitates until six these days, and dusk can bring a late summer chill that offers a reminder that September is just two weeks away. Overnight temperatures hover around 50 here in Jackson, the hummingbirds are in overdrive, readying themselves for migration, goldenrod chokes uncut hay fields, and Labor Day will all too soon be upon us.

As August gives way to September, there is a host of garden chores vying for attention. At present the kitchen counters are jammed with berries, cukes waiting to be pickled, green tomatoes for piccalilli, beans, corn, summer squash, carrots and the rest of the floodtide harvest.
