When I first heard of Jackson Ski Touring Foundation’s popular trail, I mistakenly thought it was called the “Haul Trail.” At each end, there were forest service roads — FR 325 and FR 623. It made sense that these might be timber-cut “haul roads.”

A long-distance Jackson race combining this trail and the Ellis River Trail should be called “The Long Haul Loppet.” Oxford Dictionary defines a “long haul” as “a long distance” or “a prolonged and difficult effort or task.” Skiing 10.1K from the Rocky Branch parking lot to the gate at the end of Green Hill Road is both a long distance and a “prolonged effort” climbing for an hour.
