If one of your objectives hiking is to get away from people, don’t go to Mount Major (1,786 feet) in Alton on a nice Sunday. If you don’t mind it, by all means go and have an enjoyable hike. I went there last Sunday. There were many people (and dogs) having a fun day and I did, too.

The bare summit of Mount Major is part of a 200-acre area owned by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests or Forest Society.
