It’s hard to believe that Rory McIlroy hasn’t won a major since he hoisted the Claret Jug in 2014 when he won The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, the site of this year’s tournament. McIlroy was tied for 32nd on Thursday after shooting and even par round of 71. (COURTESY PHOTO)

The Open Championship is my favorite golf tournament of the year, and it’s not close. Many will pick the Masters with the allure of the famous green jacket, but give me the Open with the elements — wind, the rough, gorse bushes and unforgiving bunkers. It’s golf the way it should be played in its purest form and it’s a spectator’s delight if you’re watching from the comfort of your sofa.
Growing up in England, while the “beautiful game” (soccer) was on hiatus, we looked forward to Wimbledon, lots of cricket (just like we need more cowbell, we need more televised cricket in the United States although my wife will disagree) and the British Open. BBC 1 (the British Broadcasting Company) would air the Open from the first player off the tee to the final putt made on the 18th green all four days, and commercial-free. It was great!
