One mantra of the current administration at New Hampshire Fish and Game’s inland fisheries division is increasing opportunity for anglers. And at the turn of the century, inland fisheries began a program to designate and protect wild brook trout in New Hampshire. Thirteen waters were designated wild brook trout waters. These waters were barbless catch-and-release waters with the use of artificial lutes only.

As added protection, these waters were closed to all fishing after Labor Day to allow brook trout to reproduce without the hassle of a fly or lure wiggling in their face. The theory was that this would increase opportunities for fishing wild brook trout populations in the protected waters.
