Even the loons were “Pepe’d” on opening day of trout pond fishing. (STEVE ANGERS PHOTO)

Last Saturday was the opening of trout ponds in New Hampshire. It is the unofficial start to the overall trout season here in the Mount Washington Valley. As is the shop tradition, Saturday morning began at the “pond that shall not be named.”

The pond was stocked early in the month of April to give the trout some time to add some weight and to get acclimated to their new surroundings. Reports came in that the mergansers and the loons were happy to have free reign on the ingestion of the hatchery trout. The fowl were the ones gaining weight.
