The High School Loop Trail is a mystery. First of all, it’s not truly a loop — yet. Second, it is not remotely near the high school. Third, it wasn’t originally a mountain bike trail. In the late 1990s, mountain bikers linked together old logging roads and the snowmobile corridor to make a rideable trail they called the “High School Loop.” It was more a “discovered” way into the woods than a purpose-built mountain bike trail.
This year, connecting the High School Loop Trail has become a focus for both the White Mountain New England Mountain Bike Association and White Mountain National Forest. These organizations have decided to work together to solve a mutual problem — conflicting bike and vehicle traffic on Forest Road 380. The road is currently the only way to connect the two ends of the High School Loop at High Street and off the Mineral Site Trail junctions.
